The ancient empire that flourished here from 3200 BC until just before the dawn of Christianity was one of the greatest civilisations the world has ever seen. At the beginning of the 19th century, after Napoleon sent his army officers to explore the land and bring back the first hand-drawn impressions of half-buried statues and columns, the Western world couldn’t get enough.
